Dayton’s national aviation heritage was in the spotlight Wednesday, Oct. 17, as a production crew for the Smithsonian Channel’s “Aerial America” TV series overflew several heritage sites for an upcoming episode. The flying produced an aerial spectacle of its own between 9-10 a.m. as “Aerial America’s” helicopter took off from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport with Wright “B” Flyer Inc.’s Wright Model “B” look-a-like airplane and accompanied it up the I-675 corridor for a flyover of historic Huffman Prairie. The helicopter also made passes over the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the Wright Brothers Memorial, Hawthorn Hill (the Wright family mansion in Oakwood) and the Wright-Dunbar Neighborhood. The website for “Aerial America” says the series offers rare glimpses of our nation’s most treasured landmarks, all seen from breathtaking heights. Emily Osborne, coordinating producer for the series, said the crew has been in Ohio for several days, gathering airborne video around Akron, Canton, Marietta, Ohio University in Athens and other locations. Shooting in Dayton was unique, she said. Because of its rich and well-preserved history, “Dayton is all aviation,” she said. The episode including Dayton is expected to air sometime next year, Osborne said. The Smithsonian Channel features original documentaries, series and programs highlighting America’s historical, cultural and scientific heritage.
We recently added a new page that provides links to other sites of interest. Two of those links, Nova — Wright Brothers’ Flying Machine, and Classroom Teachers’ Materials should be of special interest to teachers.

On Saturday, October 13, 2012 volunteers from the Wright “B” Flyer, Inc. toured the Wright Mansion in Oakwood, Ohio. This special tour was conducted by Amanda Wright Lane and Steve Wright, great grand niece and great grand nephew, respectively, of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The volunteers were treated to a dinner on the lawn following the tour. Click here to go to our Facebook site where pictures have been posted.
Due to cooler temperatures, orientation rides on the Wright “B” Flyer look-a-like will temporarily cease at the end of October 30, 2012. These rides will begin again in May 2013.
Although we won’t be flying, the museum will remain open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (9:00 am to 2:30 pm) so please feel free to come in, take a tour, look at pictures and learn some history. During the “off” season, the crew performs maintenance on the Wright “B” so when you visit you may get to see the aircraft in a tear-down mode.
This original acrylic oil painting by Mike Williams will be raffled off at the Annual Membership Dinner on October 23.
Other items that will be raffled off at the Dinner are: an Honorary Aviator Membership; a $50 Gift Shop Certificate, good for merchandise in the Wright “B” Flyer Gift Shop; a Wright “B” Flyer sweatshirt; and a Wright Flyer Die Cast signed by Amanda Wright Lane, great grand niece of Orville and Wilbur Wright.
